St. Mary's Basilica, formally the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, stands at the north-eastern corner of Kraków's Main Market Square in Poland's Old Town. This Brick Gothic structure, with foundations dating to the early 13th century and principal construction completed in the 14th century, rises approximately 80 metres and exemplifies Polish Gothic architecture. The church is renowned for its wooden altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss and monumental polychrome murals designed by history painter Jan Matejko. An hourly trumpet signal known as the Hejnał mariacki, traditionally played from the taller of its two towers, has long commemorated a medieval trumpeter said to have been shot during a Mongol attack—a legend popularized by the 1928 American novel *The Trumpeter of Krakow*. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 as part of Kraków's Historic Centre, the basilica also served as an architectural model for Polish diaspora churches abroad, including Saint Michael's in Chicago.
