St. Matthias Mission is a historic rural Catholic mission church near New Fane, Wisconsin, built in 1861 by twenty-four German-Catholic families who had immigrated from Bengel in the Rhineland during the 1850s. Originally constructed of logs and consecrated in 1863, the nave was later covered with milled weatherboard sometime before 1888. The structure exemplifies Carpenter Gothic and Gothic Revival styles, employing clapboard as its primary finish material. A tower was added in 1888, framed with vertical posts and cross-timbers joined by mortise and tenon joinery and similarly sheathed in weatherboard; the tower houses an 1883 bell and is crowned with a cross. For its first decade, the mission was served by Rev. John Reindl of Immaculate Conception in West Bend. The church, now cared for by a private foundation with its interior fully restored to original condition, remains in active use with regular summer masses and monthly first Saturday services.
