Located in Liberty Park within the World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church is a contemporary shrine designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and consecrated on July 4, 2022. Built to replace the original church of the same name destroyed on September 11, 2001—the only house of worship completely destroyed that day—the new structure draws architectural inspiration from Byzantine monuments, including the Church of the Savior and Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, as well as the Parthenon in Athens. Administered by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and developed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the building serves dual purposes: functioning as an active Greek Orthodox parish while also operating as a national shrine and interfaith community center. Beyond its liturgical role, St. Nicholas incorporates a secular bereavement space, social hall, and educational programs, positioning itself as a "House of Prayer for all people." The project, initially scheduled for 2016, experienced significant delays and cost challenges before fully opening on December 6, 2022, the Feast of Saint Nicholas.
