St. Paul's Chapel stands on the Morningside Heights campus of Columbia University in Manhattan, a striking example of stylistic duality designed by I. N. Phelps Stokes of the firm Howells & Stokes and completed in 1907. Its exterior showcases Northern Italian Renaissance Revival architecture, while the interior reveals Byzantine design—a notably different aesthetic approach that marked the chapel as the first campus building not designed by the dominant architectural firm McKim, Mead & White. The chapel was endowed by sisters Olivia Egleston Phelps Stokes and Caroline Phelps Stokes as a memorial to their parents, with their generous gift carrying a specific condition: that their nephew I. N. Phelps Stokes, author of *The Iconography of Manhattan Island*, serve as its architect. Designated a New York City Landmark and listed on the New York State Register of Historic Places, the chapel remains an important cultural and religious landmark on the university campus.
