St Paul's, Deptford, is one of London's finest Baroque parish churches, designed by gentleman architect Thomas Archer and constructed between 1712 and 1730 in what was then a settlement in Kent but is now part of South East London. Built under the auspices of the New Church Commissioners—though only 12 of the planned 50 churches were ultimately realized—it stands as one of two churches Archer designed under the Act, alongside St John's, Smith Square. The church exemplifies English Baroque and Georgian architecture and has long been recognized as one of the most moving eighteenth-century churches in London. Today it is designated a Grade I listed building.
