Standing 46 meters tall on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty is a colossal neoclassical sculpture depicting a robed and crowned woman holding aloft a torch. Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi with an iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel, this copper-clad monument was a gift from France to the United States, dedicated on October 28, 1886. The figure, inspired by the Roman goddess Libertas, clutches a tablet inscribed with the date of American independence and stands with her left foot upon a broken chain, symbolizing liberation from slavery. Conceived by French historian Édouard de Laboulaye in 1865 to commemorate both the centennial of U.S. independence and the triumph of American democracy, the statue was constructed in France, shipped in pieces, and assembled on its pedestal following a fundraising campaign led by newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer. The monument's dedication was marked by New York's first ticker-tape parade and a ceremony presided over by President Grover Cleveland.
