Located in Angola, Indiana, the Steuben County Jail is a two-and-a-half-story brick and concrete structure built in 1877 that exemplifies Second Empire style architecture. Its design features an irregular main section with a rectangular prison wing extending to the rear, crowned by a slate mansard roof and an elaborate tower topped with a pyramidal roof and ornate cupola. The building underwent modifications in the twentieth century—a porch was enclosed in 1961 and a wing was added in 1971. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, the jail stands as a significant example of nineteenth-century institutional design.
