Stillman House I, a modernist single-family home in Litchfield, Connecticut, was designed by Marcel Breuer and completed in 1950–1951. Built in the wake of Breuer's influential "House in the Museum Garden" for the Museum of Modern Art, the residence anchors an ambitious three-part commission on its six-acre site that includes a studio and a pool pavilion featuring an 18-by-10-foot mural wall by sculptor Alexander Calder. Fellow Bauhaus artist Xanti Schawinsky contributed an interior mural. The house exemplifies Breuer's signature vocabulary of simple form, natural light, and thoughtful spatial design, with characteristic patterned glazing and primary-color panels. In 1953, the Stillmans subdivided their property and invited neighbors to build the adjacent Huvelle House by Harvard Five architect John M. Johansen, establishing Litchfield's first two modernist residences. Both homes were restored in the 2010s and recognized with Citations of Merit from Docomomo US in 2014.
