The Stockholm Sweden Temple is a modern structure located in Västerhaninge, a suburb south of Stockholm. Designed by Swedish architect John Sjöström in collaboration with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' architectural staff, the original temple opened in 1985 as Scandinavia's first temple and the 34th in operation worldwide. Its distinctive design featured six spires, a masonry exterior, and a copper roof crowned with a gold-leafed statue of the angel Moroni; the interior contained roughly 16,366 square feet divided among four ordinance rooms, three sealing rooms, and a baptistry, serving members across Sweden, Norway, and Latvia. Following decades of frost damage, the structure was demolished in 2023, with a new temple of similar design but increased to approximately 31,000 square feet currently under construction on the same 4.47-acre wooded site, which also includes a guesthouse and overlies portions of the Åby Grave Field, an Iron Age archaeological site.
