Stoer Head Lighthouse, built in 1870 by brothers David and Thomas Stevenson on a promontory in the Scottish Highlands, is a stone tower standing 14 metres high. Though squat in form, the lighthouse benefits from its position atop dramatic cliffs, allowing its white beacon—flashing every fifteen seconds—to be visible up to 24 miles offshore. It was constructed as one of forty-five lighthouses deemed necessary to protect shipping around Scotland's coast and is now a category B listed building.
