Built in 1894, the Stephens Island / Takapourewa lighthouse stands 15 metres tall atop a 183-metre headland on Stephens Island in New Zealand's Marlborough District, commanding a strategic position where it guards Cook Strait and Tasman Bay. One of New Zealand's most powerful lights, its white cast iron tower emits a characteristic flash every six seconds with a range of 18 nautical miles. First lit on 29 January 1894, it remained one of the country's last staffed stations until automation on 31 March 1989, when operation transferred to Maritime New Zealand's Wellington office. Today access to the tower is restricted by permit, as the island functions as a nature reserve managed by the Department of Conservation.
