Baring Head Lighthouse is a 12-metre concrete tower built in 1935 on the North Island of New Zealand, situated at Baring Head in the Wellington Region. Lit on 18 June 1935, it was constructed as the main approach light to Wellington Harbour and a coastal marker for Cook Strait, replacing the earlier light at Pencarrow Head. Originally powered by diesel generator, the station converted to mains electricity in 1950 and was fully automated and demanned in 1989. The lighthouse benefits from its hilltop location, which elevates the focal height to 87 metres. In 2005, the original lens gave way to a flashing LED beacon with a 10-nautical-mile range. Owned and operated by Maritime New Zealand, the lighthouse remains accessible to the public via walking tracks in the southern area of the East Harbour Regional Park, south of Wainuiomata.
