Cape Palliser Lighthouse stands at Cape Palliser in the Wellington region of New Zealand's North Island, a cast-iron structure built in 1897 and rising 18 metres high. Originally fuelled by oil, the lighthouse underwent successive technological upgrades: an electric lamp powered by diesel generator replaced the oil lamp in 1954, followed by a mains connection in 1967 with retained emergency backup. The light was fully automated in 1986 and is now remotely managed from Wellington. Access to the base involves climbing a 258-step staircase built in 1912 up a 58-metre cliff, which replaced a treacherous dirt track. The lighthouse is one of three in New Zealand distinguished by a striped paint scheme, alongside Dog Island Lighthouse and Cape Campbell Lighthouse. It is owned and operated by Maritime New Zealand.
