Located on Dog Island in Foveaux Strait off Invercargill, the Dog Island Lighthouse stands as New Zealand's tallest lighthouse at 36 metres and one of its oldest, built in 1865 from stone. Designed by a prominent engineer of the era, it is notable for its masonry construction and was pioneering in its use of the first revolving beam in New Zealand, with the original light apparatus remaining in service for 60 years. Among New Zealand's most distinctive lighthouses, it is one of only three adorned with painted stripes for improved daytime visibility. Originally staffed by three lighthouse keepers, the structure has operated remotely from Wellington since 1989. Registered as a Heritage New Zealand Category I historic place, it remains an iconic symbol of New Zealand maritime heritage, having twice appeared on national stamps.
