Erected in 1896 at the end of New Zealand's longest sand spit in Golden Bay near the northern tip of the South Island, the Farewell Spit Lighthouse guides vessels entering Cook Strait from the west and south. Standing 27 metres tall, the tower is constructed of open steel lattice designed to withstand abrasive sand and salt-laden winds—a necessity given its location on sand foundations at nearly sea level, which requires it to be taller than lighthouses built on more stable terrain. Its LED rotating beacon flashes white or red every 15 seconds with a range of 19 nautical miles, displaying red to warn approaching vessels of the extensive shoaling in the area.
