Located on a remote headland at the southwest corner of New Zealand's South Island, Puysegur Point Lighthouse marks the northwest entrance to Foveaux Strait near Rakituma/Preservation Inlet in Fiordland National Park. The 5-metre cast-iron tower was constructed in 1943 as a replacement for the original wooden lighthouse, which had been destroyed by arson in February 1942. Built from surplus equipment salvaged from the Godley Head and Cape Foulwind lighthouses, the new light was commissioned in January 1943. Situated on one of New Zealand's most isolated and inaccessible headlands, the lighthouse overlooks the Tasman Sea and continues to serve mariners navigating the treacherous waters around Stewart Island.
