Sunrise, also known as MacCorkle Mansion, is a three-story stone residence built in 1905 by William A. MacCorkle, West Virginia's ninth governor, and sited on a bluff overlooking the Kanawha River in Charleston. The Georgian and Neoclassical structure features a gabled roof punctuated with dormers and chimneys, surmounted by an intricate cornice that creates an optical illusion of reduced scale. Its north façade showcases four imposing Doric columns supporting an ashlar-finished pediment. The mansion's commanding position affords views of nearly the entire city from its northern portico. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, Sunrise later housed the Sunrise Museum before that institution relocated in 2003. Now privately owned and closed to the public, the property remains an exemplar of early twentieth-century regional grandeur.
