The Taj Mahal Palace is a five-star luxury hotel in Mumbai's Colaba district, standing next to the Gateway of India. Built in 1903 in the Indo-Saracenic style, it opened as one of the finest hotels in the East during the British Raj and takes its name from the celebrated monument in Agra, some 650 kilometres away. The hotel comprises two architecturally distinct structures: the original 1903 palace building and a tower added in 1972. Today it operates as the flagship property of the Taj Hotels group, managed by the Tata-owned Indian Hotels Company Limited, with 560–600 rooms, 44 suites, and a staff of 1,500. The building is a significant heritage landmark in Mumbai's history.
