Completed in 1938, the Tampere Bus Station in the Ratina district represents a landmark of Nordic functionalist architecture, designed by Jaakko Laaksovirta and Bertel Strömmer. Upon opening, it was the largest bus station in the Nordic countries. The building's fortunes shifted with changing transport patterns: peak activity in the late 1960s gave way to declining ridership as automobile traffic increased. In 2004, the city chose to preserve the station in its original location rather than relocate it to the Central Station. A substantial renovation undertaken from late 2007 to 2008 repositioned departure platforms eastward and removed bus parking, coordinating the station's future with the nearby Ratina shopping center (completed 2015–2018). Protected as a cultural site and architectural monument, the bus station remains a centerpiece of Tampere's transport infrastructure, approximately 20 minutes by bus from the city's airport.
