Situated on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi, Georgia, the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre is among the oldest opera houses in Eastern Europe, founded in 1851. Designed by Baltic German architect Victor Schröter and completed in 1896, the building exemplifies Moorish Revival architecture with exotic Oriental decorations and ornamental richness, yet maintains a conventional European opera house layout in its foyers and main hall. Named after Georgian national composer Zacharia Paliashvili since 1937, the theatre serves as Georgia's principal opera house and cultural institution. It has endured multiple fires and major restorations, including a comprehensive six-year rehabilitation completed in January 2016 at a cost of approximately 40 million U.S. dollars. The theatre is home to the State Ballet of Georgia and has hosted internationally celebrated performers while remaining a traditional venue for national celebrations and presidential inaugurations.
