The Temple of Hera at Olympia is an ancient Archaic Greek temple built around 580 BC in the Doric order, making it the oldest sanctuary at the site and among the most revered in Greece. Originally shared with Zeus before his own temple was erected, the Heraion was oriented east-west and housed the altar where the Olympic flame continues to be kindled in modern times, linking the ancient sacred precinct to global Olympic ceremonies. Largely destroyed by an earthquake in the early fourth century AD, its ruins remain a defining monument of early Greek religious architecture.
