The Capitol is a historic department store in Fayetteville, North Carolina, originally established in 1921 and developed through successive expansions that reflect mid-twentieth-century retail architecture. An existing two-story building was incorporated into the store in 1936, and the structure was doubled in size with a large rear addition in 1949. The building's most distinctive feature is its 60-foot-wide Modern Movement storefront, added in 1955, which displays marble facing, a recessed entrance, a striking convex full-height window on the second story, and prominent aluminum script lettering. As the last department store to operate in downtown Fayetteville before its closure in March 1990, it represents an important chapter in the city's commercial history. The Capitol was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
