The Heights, a historic country estate on Vermont Route 30 in Middlebury, developed during the 1870s and 1880s, represents one of Vermont's finest estates of that period. Designed by architect Clinton Smith and begun in 1870, the house blends Italianate and Queen Anne architectural styles. Also known as the Thaddeus Chapman House, the property was recognized for its historical significance when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
