The Fort, a prominent two-story brick house built in 1877, stands on a hilltop northeast of North Lewisburg in Union County, Ohio. This square structure measures five bays on each side and exemplifies Italianate and Renaissance Revival architecture through its ornamental cornice, carved stone lintels, and distinctive two-story bay window centered on its facade. The ashlar-stone foundation supports a hip roof finished in multicolored imbricated slate, while chimneys rise at both side walls. Porches flank the front entrance. Positioned amidst farmland, its commanding elevation renders its architectural details visible from considerable distances. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, The Fort was recognized for its well-preserved Italianate design—rated among the finest rural examples in Union County—and for its historical significance as the home of Shepard Clark, a renowned horse breeder and son of an early Allen Township settler.
