Built in 1881 by William English, an Irish-born farmer and brickworks operator in Darke County, Ohio, this Italianate and Renaissance Revival farmhouse stands northeast of Versailles along State Route 47. Enlarged to accommodate both English's family and employees of his brick manufacturing operation, the residence reflects its owner's astronomical interests through deliberate architectural alignments: four doors and eight windows on the western façade face exactly westward, while recessed porches on the southern side position their doors to receive sunlight at noon on specific days of the year. Situated atop a small hill to maximize solar exposure, the house was recognized for its well-preserved historic architecture when listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
