The Thomas U. Butts House at 1214 3rd Avenue in Columbus, Georgia, is a two-story balloon frame residence originally built in 1896 for W. I. Struppa, a purser. Extensively renovated in 1928 into Prairie School style, the house features a clay tile hipped roof, two exterior chimneys, and a central entrance with a Classical Revival-styled porch. Its original weatherboarded exterior was replaced with brick laid in stretcher bond during the 1928 renovation. The property was purchased in 1908 by Thomas Usher Butts, a prominent lumber businessman, whose family occupied the home for over fifty years until 1959. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, it was recognized as part of a comprehensive survey of historic resources in Columbus.
