Kaohsiung's 85 Sky Tower is an 85-story skyscraper completed in 1997 by the now-defunct Tuntex Group in Lingya District, Taiwan. Designed by C.Y. Lee & Partners and Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum, the 347.5-meter structure stands as the city's tallest building and Taiwan's second-tallest after Taipei 101. Its distinctive 'prong' design features two separate 39-floor sections that merge into a single central tower and spire, inspired by the Chinese character Gāo meaning "tall." The building originally housed diverse amenities including a department store, five-star hotel, observatory, and entertainment venues; as of 2023, however, it remains nearly vacant except for limited residential and office spaces on the lower floors, with many stories deteriorating from decades of disuse. Architectural details include the omission of a 44th floor due to tetraphobia and a pyramid-shaped crown equivalent to three stories.
