The Unité d'habitation is a modernist residential housing typology developed by Le Corbusier in collaboration with painter-architect Nadir Afonso, originating in 1952 in France. The concept formed the basis of several housing developments throughout Europe sharing the same name, reaching prominence in the 1950s and 1960s. The most celebrated example stands in southern Marseille, where it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2016 for its profound influence on modernist architecture and was designated a historic monument by the French Ministry of Culture. The building sustained fire damage in February 2012.
