The University of Brasília is a federal public university founded in 1962 on the banks of Paranoá Lake in Brazil's capital city, conceived under the utopian vision of educator Anísio Teixeira and anthropologist Darcy Ribeiro. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, one of Modernism's most celebrated architects, the university's main building is the Central Institute of Sciences. Spread across four campuses—with the Darcy Ribeiro campus as its nucleus—UnB comprises 26 faculties and schools offering over 105 undergraduate programs and 147 graduate degree programs, alongside 18 specialized research centres. The institution has consistently ranked among Brazil's top five universities and the top fifteen in South America, with particular strength in economics, international affairs, political science, law, anthropology, and mathematics. Beyond its academic mission, UnB operates a University Hospital, veterinary hospital, and the Fazenda Água Limpa, an agricultural research facility outside the city, while its Central Library holds the largest archive in Midwestern Brazil.
