Located on Church Street in Chillicothe, Ohio, the Vanmeter Church Street House is a two-and-a-half-story brick Greek Revival structure built in 1848 by farmer William H. Thompson. Eight years after its completion, the house was purchased by John I. Vanmeter, a Virginia-born Whig politician who had resided in Ross County for three decades and served in the Ohio House of Representatives, Ohio Senate, and a single term in the United States House of Representatives from 1843 to 1845. Constructed of brick laid in stretcher bond and topped with a metal roof, the building ranks among the area's finest Greek Revival examples and remains part of a well-preserved neighborhood of nineteenth-century houses. The property, which Vanmeter bequeathed to family members upon his death, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 along with two associated outbuildings, recognized for both its architectural significance and its place in local history.
