Via Laietana is a major street in Barcelona's Ciutat Vella district that runs from Plaça d'Urquinaona in the city center to the seafront, separating the Gothic Quarter from the neighbourhoods of La Ribera, El Born, and Sant Pere. Named after the Laietani, an Iberian people who once inhabited the region around Barcelona, the avenue is lined with significant examples of Modernista, Art Deco, and Noucentista neo-classical architecture. It historically served as headquarters for numerous financial institutions, including former buildings of la Caixa and Caixa Catalunya, as well as other major institutions. Now recognized as an urban ensemble and cultural asset of Catalan heritage, Via Laietana represents an important extension of the Eixample district into the old city.
