The Villa d'Este, a 16th-century Renaissance masterpiece in Tivoli near Rome, stands as an unparalleled example of Italian architectural and garden design. Designed by Pirro Ligorio, the villa is celebrated above all for its terraced hillside Italian garden and the ingenious integration of fountains, ornamental basins, and elaborately decorated ceilings throughout the property. This Giardino all'italiana became hugely influential on European landscape design and remains an incomparable testament to Renaissance aesthetic ambition. Now an Italian state museum, the Villa d'Este has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.
