Birkirkara, Malta

Visible from the street; the inside is private.
Villa Lauri is an early twentieth-century Neoclassical townhouse in Birkirkara, Malta, built as a private family residence in 1945. The property is divided between private ownership and the Roman Catholic Church; the ecclesiastical portion was once named Dar Frate Francesco by Franciscan friars. Since the 1980s, the building has primarily served social welfare purposes, housing local minors with difficulties and, from 2001 to 2006, unaccompanied child refugees. A chapel dedicated to Blessed Nazju Falzon was inaugurated within the building in early 2001. Following extensive structural renovation that preserved the original façade while modernizing the interior, the home was later adapted to host migrant families until its closure in 2010. The chapel closed in early 2017, and the building is currently undergoing renovation.
