The Votivkirche, a neo-Gothic church on Vienna's Ringstraße in the Alsergrund district, was commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian following an assassination attempt on Emperor Franz Joseph in 1853. Designed by Heinrich von Ferstel and constructed from Wöllersdorf limestone, the votive church rises 99 meters and was dedicated in 1879 on the silver anniversary of the Emperor and Empress Elisabeth. Built with funds solicited throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the church stands as a monument of gratitude for the Emperor's survival, its soaring Gothic Revival spires a distinctive feature of Vienna's architectural landscape.
