St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna's Innere Stadt is a Roman Catholic cathedral and the mother church of the Archdiocese of Vienna. Built beginning in 1137, the cathedral's current Romanesque and Gothic form largely took shape under Duke Rudolf IV (1339–1365), rising from the ruins of two earlier churches, the first consecrated in 1147. Standing at 136.44 metres tall with a distinctive multi-coloured tile roof, the cathedral has become one of Vienna's most recognizable landmarks. As the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna and the city's most important religious building, St. Stephen's Cathedral has witnessed pivotal moments in Habsburg and Austrian history. The structure contains 256 stairs from top to bottom and holds protected status as a listed object in Austria.
