The Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary and St. Rupert in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, is a Romanesque church begun in 1207 and consecrated in 1279. Its nave is oriented to align with sunrise on Pentecost, May 24, 1192, commemorating Duke Leopold V's investiture by Emperor Henry VI. Once the cathedral of the Diocese of Wiener Neustadt from 1468 to 1785, it now serves as a parish church. The building acquired significant Baroque elements during the tenure of Melchior Klesl (1588–1630), who commissioned the first Baroque pulpit, and the interior was further enriched in 1776 with a Baroque altar featuring Giandomenico Cignaroli's altarpiece of the Assumption of Mary. After earthquake damage necessitated demolition of the westwork and towers in 1886, they were reconstructed between 1892 and 1899, with Emperor Franz Josef attending the completion ceremony. The structure endured an arson-set fire in March 2012, requiring six months of repairs.
