Located in Winterset, Iowa, the W.J. and Nettie J. Cornell House is a Queen Anne residence constructed between 1893 and 1896 by banker W.J. Cornell, who engaged local contractor Fred Lewis for the project. The 2½-story frame structure employs an asymmetrical design organized around a simple cross-gable system, featuring a facade projection and second-floor porch. After the Cornells sold the house to Samuel Ruby—a railroad lawyer and former U.S. Consul to Belfast—in 1898 for $5,000, the Rubeys added a wrap-around porch during their occupancy. The property subsequently passed to A. W. Crawford, a grocer and land speculator known for his philanthropic contributions to Winterset. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
