The Walnut Street Theatre, founded in 1808 at the corner of Walnut and South Ninth Streets in Philadelphia's Washington Square West neighborhood, is the oldest continuously operating theatre in the United States. Designed by architect William Strickland in the Neoclassical style, the building has served as a cultural institution for over two centuries. Today it operates under the Walnut Street Theatre Company, a non-profit organization, and houses three performance spaces: the Mainstage for the company's primary productions, the Independence Studio on the third floor for smaller works, and Studio 5 on the fifth floor, which is available for independent productions. The theatre is recognized as both a National Historic Landmark and a listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
