Wellington Railway Station is the principal railway terminus for New Zealand's capital city and the southern endpoint of the North Island Main Trunk, Wairarapa Line, and Johnsonville Line. Completed in 1937, this Neoclassical building replaced two earlier Wellington termini at Lambton and Thorndon. Originally constructed as the head office of the New Zealand Railways Department, the station opened in June of that year and has undergone various alterations since. Today it houses the KiwiRail Wellington office in its east wing. The building was registered as a Category 1 Historic Place by Heritage New Zealand in 1986.
