Situated at 1096 Vermont Route 30 in Townshend, the Wheelock House is a mid-19th-century residence distinguished by an uncommon architectural fusion of Greek Revival and southern Gothic Revival styles—a combination otherwise unknown in Vermont. Built in stages during this period, the house stands as a historical anomaly both for its stylistic hybridity and for the possibility that portions were constructed using slave labor, an exceptionally rare circumstance in the state. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, the property now serves as an art gallery.
