The Whitechapel Gallery, located on Whitechapel High Street in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, is a public art gallery designed by Charles Harrison Townsend and opened in 1901. As one of London's first publicly funded galleries dedicated to temporary exhibitions, it exemplifies the British Modern Style of Art Nouveau architecture. The Grade II* listed building was substantially enlarged in 2009 when the adjacent former Passmore Edwards library was incorporated, approximately doubling its size. The gallery continues to exhibit contemporary art, mounting retrospective and thematic shows.
