Whitehaven, a neoclassical plantation house built in 1865 in Paducah, Kentucky, is the only historic house in the United States to serve simultaneously as a rest area. Also known as the Anderson-Smith House, it has functioned since 1983 as Kentucky's welcome center on Interstate 24 near the state border with Illinois. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, the building represents an unusual adaptive reuse that preserves its architectural heritage while serving modern travelers.
