The William E. Brainard House, built in 1888 in Portland's Mount Tabor neighborhood, exemplifies the Italianate style that graced one of the city's most prestigious residential districts in the late nineteenth century. Named for its original owner—a farmer, real estate investor, and banker—the house is among the few grand residences of that era still standing in the neighborhood. It subsequently housed other prominent figures, including stock broker and investment banker George W. Davis and dentist John C. Welch. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
