The Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison, designed by architect George B. Post in the Beaux-Arts style, was completed in 1917 and houses both chambers of the Wisconsin Legislature, the Wisconsin Supreme Court, and the Office of the Governor. The fifth capitol building in Wisconsin's history since territorial establishment in 1836 and the third since statehood in 1848, it stands as the tallest structure in Madison—a distinction protected by state law prohibiting nearby buildings from exceeding the height of its 187-foot dome columns. Located at the southwestern end of the Madison Isthmus in downtown Madison, the Capitol is surrounded by the streets forming Capitol Square and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and National Register of Historic Places listing.
