Located in downtown Austin, the Texas State Capitol is the seat of government for the state of Texas, housing the Legislature's chambers and offices as well as the Governor's residence. Designed by architect Elijah E. Myers in 1881 and constructed between 1882 and 1888 under civil engineer Reuben Lindsay Walker, the building exemplifies Mediterranean Revival and Renaissance Revival architecture. Standing 302.64 feet tall, it ranks as the sixth-tallest state capitol in the nation and exceeds the height of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. A significant underground extension was added in 1993. The building earned recognition as a National Historic Landmark in 1986 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
