Located in Washington, Iowa, the Woodlawn Cemetery Gates and Shelter represent a striking application of Egyptian Revival architecture to early twentieth-century civic infrastructure. The entrance gates and fence, completed in 1917, feature six obelisk posts constructed of river rock and capped with concrete slabs topped by flat pyramids, along with three iron gates. The shelter house, finished a decade later in 1926, is a square structure of clay tile and stucco with stone obelisks anchoring its corners. Both structures were realized through fundraising efforts of the Washington Improvement League, established in 1915 to advance civic improvements. The ensemble's Egyptian Revival style—uncommon for such utilitarian cemetery features—distinguishes it as a notable example of the architectural tastes of its era.
