Yererouk is an ancient Armenian basilica near the village of Anipemza in Shirak Province, built on a plateau overlooking the Akhurian River some 5 kilometers southeast of the lost city of Ani. Begun in the 4th century, construction was interrupted in the 5th century and completed in the 6th century, making it one of the earliest surviving Christian monuments in Armenia and a seminal example of Paleo-Christian Armenian architecture. Because the basilica appears in no historical sources, its dates remain hypothetical, though recent architectural analysis—including stratigraphic examination, study of sculptural decoration and inscriptions, and comparison with contemporary Syrian churches—has helped establish its chronology. The church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 1995.
