Near Canton Bend, Alabama, Youpon Plantation stands as a three-story Greek Revival mansion completed in 1848. Originally called Mimosa and later known as the Mathews-Tait-Rutherford House, the antebellum complex was named for the Yaupon holly trees that once graced its front grounds. Architectural historians at the Alabama Historical Commission regard it as among the state's most distinguished "stately pillared houses." The building was extensively documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1936 and 1937, preserving detailed records of its design and construction.
