A Mediterranean Revival house in Altadena, California, designed by Myron Hunt and Elmer Grey and completed in 1907, the Zane Grey Estate was originally built by Chicago business machine manufacturer Arthur Herbert Woodward. Constructed entirely of reinforced concrete as a fireproof home—a requirement insisted upon by Woodward's wife, Edith Norton Woodward, a survivor of the 1903 Iroquois Theater Fire—it became the first such fireproof residence in Altadena. In 1920, author Zane Grey and his wife purchased the property, inspired by memories of visiting during their honeymoon, and added a rooftop studio and library. The house remained in the Grey family's hands until 1970. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, the estate was destroyed by the Eaton Fire in January 2025, leaving only portions of its concrete walls standing.
