Zion Lutheran Church, a Gothic Revival brick edifice with stone foundations and accents, stands along Prospect Avenue near downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Constructed in 1902 and opened in 1903, it was designed by Frank Walker of the architectural firm Walker and Weeks to serve the city's east-side German community. The congregation itself, founded by German immigrants in 1843, is Cleveland's oldest extant Lutheran church and had previously occupied a downtown location before relocating to this wealthier residential neighborhood. An adjacent school building, completed shortly before the church and designed by William Dunn, combines Queen Anne and Colonial Revival elements; originally founded in 1848 with instruction conducted entirely in German, it is now closed. Both structures, integral to a stretch of Prospect Avenue that once housed some of the city's grandest religious buildings, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
